In which I spend time with people like me
This weekend we held the third edition of High Camp – an LGBTQ+ bikepacking retreat in the Peak District that has become one of the highlights of my summer.
It was one of those ideas that came together very quickly. Back in 2024, my colleague Jess and I were having one of those conversations where you throw ideas around, and the moment we realised that running a camping weekend in the High Peak meant we could call it ‘High Camp’, we knew we would have to make this a reality.
As always, I was worried that people wouldn’t enjoy themselves, that they’d find fault with our provisions, and that the rain would ruin everything. And, as always, I was reliably proved wrong, because each year we have somehow managed to attract a group of people who turn up firmly intending to have fun and make friends, and equipped to deal with whatever weather the Peak District throws at them.
